To further enhance the security of W&L’s virtual Infrastructure, myVI will be connected to Duo Multi-Factor Authentication starting on September 9, 2020. Employees and students currently enrolled in Duo will begin seeing a prompt to authenticate when logging into myVi.wlu.edu. This only applies to those currently set up with a Duo account.

What is the impact?

If you’re enrolled in Duo, you’re used to seeing a prompt periodically to validate your identity before logging into your W&L email and Box accounts. You will now see similar prompts when using myVi.wlu.edu.

What is myVI?

myVI, your computer in the cloud, provides a convenient way for students, staff, and faculty to access a Windows desktop environment, including Windows software and W&L network storage, from any device and from anywhere with an Internet connection. What is Duo?

Duo Multi-Factor Authentication is the solution W&L will use going forward to protect against attacks on university accounts. Duo eliminates single-factor authentication (i.e., passwords alone) in favor of a more secure method know as multi-factor authentication. With Duo, two things (i.e., factors) will be required to gain access to a variety of applications on the University’s network. The first factor is something you know, which happens to be your login credentials (username and password). The second factor is something you have, like a smartphone. If cyber-criminals have access to your login credentials but not your phone, they only have one factor. According to Melanie Maynes, Senior Product Marketing Manager for Microsoft Security, this one simple action can prevent 99.9 percent of attacks on your accounts.
