Over the past several months, ITS has been testing Nudge, a helpful app that reminds you to install important updates on your university-owned Mac to keep it secure and running smoothly. Starting on January 29, 2025, if your computer requires an update, Nudge will display reminders and provide clear, easy instructions on how to complete the process. It’s designed to ensure your Mac stays up-to-date without being disruptive or confusing.
The adoption of Nudge by many universities and colleges reflects a growing focus in higher education on maintaining secure and up-to-date systems. Nudge helps protect the campus network by ensuring individual devices are equipped with the latest security updates, reducing the risk of vulnerabilities.
You will only be Nudged if your computer requires an update. To avoid Nudge notifications, ensure that you are updated with the latest macOS release.
What Should Mac Users Expect?
- Periodic reminders: You’ll receive notifications when updates are required.
- Flexible scheduling: You can defer updates to a more convenient time.
- Simple process: Nudge will guide you through the update process using Apple’s built-in Software Update feature.
What Should You Know About Using Nudge?
- When you receive a Nudge notification, review the update information.
- It is always recommended to back up your data on Box or an external hard drive prior to updating your operating system. It is also important to ensure that you have a minimum of 45 GB of storage space before upgrading from one macOS to another such as, Monterey to Sequoia. (Find out how much storage you have by clicking the Apple icon in the menu bar > About this Mac > Storage Tab).
- Click “Open Software Update” to proceed with the installation or choose to defer if needed.
- Follow the prompts to complete the update through System Preferences/Settings.
Please note that as the required installation date approaches, reminders will become more frequent. After the deadline, applications may be blocked if you do not update your computer.
