Starting March 17, ITS will begin automatically updating several core applications on all university‑owned Mac computers, including Box Drive, Firefox, Chrome, Zoom, Keeper Password Manager, and TeamViewer QuickSupport. More applications will be added later.
This new process has been running on ITS and pilot group Macs for months without any issues.
How it works:
- Only apps already installed on your Mac will be updated.
- If the app is open, you’ll get a Self Service pop‑up with up to 7 days to run the update. After that, Jamf will give a 10‑minute warning before closing, updating, and reopening the app automatically.
- If the app is not in use, the update will install quietly in the background.
- If the “Do Not Disturb” Focus setting is enabled indefinitely, the user will miss all update notifications, and the app will close to update without any warning.
Automatic updates will NOT access your personal data or information.

Automatic Update FAQs
Why is ITS automating updates?
Automated updates keep Macs secure, improve performance, and reduce the number of outdated or vulnerable applications on campus.
Which applications are included?
At launch:
Box Drive, Firefox, Google Chrome, Zoom, Keeper Password Manager, and TeamViewer QuickSupport.
More apps will be added over time.
Will new applications be installed automatically?
No. Only apps already installed on your Mac will receive updates.
What happens if I’m using the app when an update is available?
You’ll get a W&L Self Service pop-up. You have 7 days to run the update when convenient.
What if I don’t update within 7 days?
You’ll receive a 10‑minute grace period before Jamf automatically closes the app, updates it, and reopens it.
Will updates interrupt my work?
Updates only interrupt you if the app is open and the 7‑day window expires. If the app isn’t being used, the update installs silently in the background.
