Security and Privacy for the W&L Community

Mission

The purpose of the office of Information Technology Services (ITS) Information Security Plan is to support the academic mission and culture of Washington and Lee University by striving to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the University’s information technology assets in accordance with the University’s Information Security Program and Confidentiality Policy and other applicable standards and procedures.

Best Practice Tools

In 2018, the University adopted a cloud based solution called Box to ensure documents and files could be seamlessly stored and shared while maintaining controls like authentication and encryption. With Box, we’re able to avoid large email attachments and the security issues they create. Our users can preview 120+ file types including Word, Excel, PDF, Zip, and PSD — without downloading a single file.

Advanced Threat Protection, or ATP from Microsoft is a cloud-based email filtering service that protects against unknown malware and viruses while safeguarding our users from harmful threats in real time. W&L relies on ATP to check email attachments and links for malicious content, as well as attempts by cyber-criminals to impersonate or spoof the identity of our users.

Okta is the University’s single-sign-on service that gives our users quick access to multiple applications, from the “My Apps” page with a single ID and password. In addition to increasing productivity within business operations and the teaching & learning environment, single-sign-on also enhances security by minimizing inadequate or forgotten passwords and thus reducing the number of pathways available for cyber-criminals to attack our network.

Duo is a critical piece of our modern security architecture and is required for all W&L accounts. The Duo service gives our users an added layer of protection using multi-factor authentication (MFA) when accessing University applications. DUO MFA is quick and easy to set up and significantly limits the ability of cyber-criminals to gain access to your accounts.
