Recently Microsoft added enhanced phishing and spam protection capabilities to their cloud-based email service. The soon to be implemented feature by ITS will tag all incoming email messages that originate outside the W&L community with the word “EXTERNAL”. The goal is to provide students, faculty, and staff with a convenient reminder to be cautious and attentive to messages that are not sent from inside the wlu.edu domain.

According to Microsoft, some Outlook email clients will include a ‘mail tip’ at the top of the reading pane with the sender’s email address (see image below).

As of this writing, the new “EXTERNAL” email tags will only show up in Outlook on the web, the new Outlook for Mac, and Outlook mobile (iOS and Android).

As always, if you have additional questions about this update, please contact the ITS Helpdesk at X4357 or help@wlu.edu.
