Connecting a MacBook

If you’re having trouble connecting your MacBook to eduroam following the recent certificate upgrade on the campus wireless network, please try the steps below.

1. Open Device Management

From the Apple menu, choose System Settings. Click General in the sidebar, then scroll to the bottom of the list on the right and click Device Management.

2. Select the eduroam profile and click the minus button

At the top of the window, under the heading User, click eduroam once so the row is highlighted. Then click the minus button (−) at the bottom left of the window.

If eduroam appears only under Device (Managed) and not under User, it was installed by the university and there is nothing to remove here. Skip to step 5 and try reconnecting, or contact the Helpdesk.

3. Confirm the removal

macOS asks whether you’re sure. Click Remove. This clears the stored Wi-Fi settings and certificate for eduroam and nothing else.

4. Authorize the change

A Device Management/MDM prompt asks for permission. Enter the username and password of an administrator account on this Mac and click OK. The eduroam entry then disappears from the User list.

If you don’t have an administrator account on the machine, stop here and bring the Mac to the ITS Helpdesk.

5. Join eduroam again

Click Wi-Fi in the sidebar and look under Other Networks. Move the pointer over eduroam and click Connect.

6. Sign in with your W&L account

Leave Identity set to None. In Account Name, type your full W&L email address, including @wlu.edu, then enter your W&L password below it. Leave Remember this information switched on, then click OK.

If a certificate notice appears next, click Continue and enter the Mac’s administrator login once more to trust it. Wi-Fi should show eduroam as connected within a few seconds.

If it still won’t connect

  • Check that the password you typed is your current W&L password. A recent password change is the usual reason eduroam stops working.
  • Restart the Mac and try step 5 again — a reboot clears any Wi-Fi settings still held in memory.
  • Confirm eduroam is gone from Device Management. If it reappeared under User, remove it once more, then reconnect before doing anything else.
  • Still stuck? Contact the ITS Helpdesk (help@wlu.edu) and mention that the manual eduroam profile has already been removed.
