Securely Disposing Mobile Devices

March 28th, Tip of the Week  | Do you plan on giving away or selling one of your older mobile devices? Make sure you wipe or reset your device before disposing of it. Also, be sure to remove any active logins to cloud-based services. If you don’t, the next person who owns it will have access to all of your accounts and personal information.

SMS Phishing Attempts Are on the Rise

March 21st, Tip of the Week  | Be suspicious of any text message you were not expecting. If you receive a package delivery notice by text, don’t immediately click on the link. Instead, go directly to the website of the company you were expecting a package from. Log into your account and track your package from there. Be especially suspicious if you receive a request to “re-enter” your credit card information to confirm shipping or delivery.

How Can You Protect Your Identity?

March 14th, Tip of the Week  | Keep your financial records like Social Security and Medicare cards, and any other documents that have personal information in a safe place. Shred paper documents before you dispose of them. Don’t give out your Social Security number easily. Ask questions first. Does your dentist or child’s school really need it? Verify the Messages You Receive

March 7th, Tip of the Week  | Be careful what you click and/or download from emails. Understand that as a W&L student or employee, your publicly available information may be used in an attempt to trick you through phishing or spear phishing campaigns. When in doubt, take the extra step to verify messages you receive. Remember you can always contact the ITS Helpdesk (help@wlu.edu) for assistance.
