ITS would like to remind all members of the W&L community about the University Policy prohibiting the use of peer-to-peer (P2P) software to engage in illegal file sharing. Please click here for a detailed account of the policy associated with copyright and other intellectual property issues.
Please be aware that while there are evolving evasive technologies to the technological deterrents the University uses, the legal ramifications of downloading or sharing copyrighted materials can be severe. Federal law requires the University to take action when it is notified a user on its network is distributing copyrighted materials, and is detailed in Section X of the Copyright Policy.
W&L does have a plan in place to deter unauthorized distribution of copyrighted material by users of the University’s network, while at the same time not unduly interfering with educational and research-related use of the network. For a detailed summary of this plan, please refer to the following document.
ITS is available to help, should you have questions or concerns regarding P2P software and file sharing. Contact the ITS Helpdesk at X4357 or help@wlu.edu if you need assistance.
